5 Minutes a Day: Mindfulness to Gently Release Tension and Stress




Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was founded in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a molecular biologist who integrated principles of Eastern Zen meditation into a scientifically validated approach to stress management. His program, known as the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course, has since gained worldwide recognition for its effectiveness in improving mental and physical well-being.


Studies show that healthcare workers in high-stress environments who participated in an 8-week MBSR program (150 minutes per day) returned to clinical practice with greater emotional stability and a deeper sense of empathy toward patients and families. Mindfulness was also found to enhance the balance of the sympathetic nervous system, strengthen parasympathetic function, and alleviate symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, anxiety, and autonomic nervous system imbalance. These benefits contribute to better health, interpersonal relationships, and professional performance.


Beyond medical settings, MBSR has proven beneficial for patients experiencing chronic pain, cancer, or palliative care. However, it’s equally valuable for anyone seeking peace in daily life. Despite its popularity, many still misunderstand what “mindfulness” truly means. Simply put, mindfulness is the practice of “being aware of the present moment,” which involves three key elements:

  1. Focusing on present physical activity – Whether you’re eating, walking, or breathing, direct your awareness to the current moment. For instance, during mindful breathing, observe each inhalation and exhalation naturally, without trying to control it.

  2. Awareness of bodily sensations – During an activity like an interview, most people focus solely on the conversation. Mindfulness invites you to also notice how your body feels—any tension, warmth, or restlessness you might experience.

  3. Exploratory awareness – Once you notice physical sensations, explore them further. Observe how they connect with your emotions and thoughts.

Often, when we’re deeply engaged in an activity, we lose touch with our body’s subtle signals—discomfort, tension, or even pain. Over time, these unnoticed sensations can accumulate and manifest as stress or fatigue.

In modern life, where stress is constant, mindfulness offers a simple and accessible way to recharge and calm the mind. You can begin by dedicating just five minutes a day to yourself. Choose a quiet space free from distractions, sit comfortably with your back straight, and focus on your natural breathing. Allow thoughts to come and go without resistance. When your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your breath—again and again.


Essential Mindful Attitudes:


  • Curiosity: Be curious about your sensations. Notice whether your breathing feels faster or slower.
  • Non-judgment: Don’t criticize or evaluate your experience. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to breathe or focus.
  • Acceptance: Embrace your thoughts and feelings as they are, without trying to change them.
  • Self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and respect—appreciate who you are in this moment.
  • Letting go: Avoid forcing or controlling the experience. Allow everything to unfold naturally.


Mindfulness isn’t limited to breathing exercises—it can be applied to everyday activities like eating, brushing your teeth, or walking. For example, if stress builds up by midday, you can use your lunch break to practice mindful eating: turn off your phone, chew slowly, and fully experience the texture and flavor of your food. This simple act becomes a 5-minute mindfulness session that restores calm and focus.

As you continue to practice, you may gradually extend the duration from 5 minutes to 10, 20, or even 30 minutes. Over time, you’ll likely notice greater emotional balance, improved concentration, and a deeper sense of inner peace. Through consistent mindfulness practice, both body and mind can return to a state of harmony—helping you live each day with clarity and calm.
